An Ode to Gord

I’m not usually one to get that connected to a famous person, but for some reason this particular one seemed to resonate with me more.  As you all know, Gord Downie from The Tragically Hip passed away October 17th, 2017 late in the evening. We didn’t hear about it until the next morning. It was all over social media, the news, you name it.  It hit our hearts hard. The following is a little Ode to Gord. I hope you enjoy.

Gord…

I remember you from my first job, serving nachos in a local stadium.

“You were there” playing with your band. This was many years ago.

I was a teen, making a start into my musical world.

I loved the way you played with that microphone stand. Yes, I can picture it clearly in your hand.

Fast forward a few years ago you followed us in our car as we drove across the country from Ontario to British Columbia and back. Your music resonated in our ears and heart.

I have visited places you sang about. Isle aux Mort in The Dire Wolf is my mom’s hometown. I have walked to Mistaken Point, the place where fossils are 400 million years old.  I’ve driving through Bobcaygeon and I’ve watched “constellations reveal themselves, one star at a time” on my many outdoor trips.

Fast forward yet again, and we meet one last time.  It was August 20th, 2016 in Kingston, Ontario.

It was your last show.

It was my son’s FIRST concert.

Your songs now educate and inform him of our country.

For this I thank you. I have so much more I could say to you, but I leave it here.

Thank you…

RIP Gord

He was clearly excited for his first concert.
