Summer is back?
The first two weeks back at work (I work in a school), all I could think about was camping. Yes, I have gone out lots this year, but I wanted to go again. Then I received another notification from Cruising Canoes that they were hosting a 2 day fishing trip to Puzzle Lake Provincial Park. I was in! It’s the perfect time frame for me.
When talking to some friends, Kerri from the last trip also decided to join in. There was a little competition as well to see who could catch the biggest fish. Game on! I had very little to pack since we would be supplied with all the gear and fishing poles. We met early Saturday morning, packed our gear and headed out.
I have never been to Puzzle Lake, so this was yet another new park for me. I’m going to have to up my game for next year. Right away we were graced with a beautiful lake, beautiful views and obviously wonderful company!
Isn’t this such a great view? There were no clouds in the sky and the weather was favorable.
Once we reached our destination after a few portages, we got set up, had lunch and then headed out for some fishing. I had almost caught a fish but it jumped off my line! I did manage to catch a snake! It was really interested in the fake worm I had on my line and decided to try to take a nibble. I didn’t get a picture of it though.
After some fishing, the sun was just beaming and it was getting really hot. We decided to check out the lake and go cliff jumping. The water here was so clear and turquoise that you can see the cliffs plummet deep down and disappear.
For supper we had hamburgers cooked on the open fire (nothing better than this!), we went out for some more fishing. I managed to catch a couple of little bass, none that was keep worthy, so back into the lake they went.
Our evening was just top notch. The lake was calm and even though we didn’t have the sunset shining on our site like the site in the picture below, we did have the sun light up the cliffs around our site. I could sit here forever!
Sunday Morning
Sunrise was just as equally nice as sunset. The lake gave us mirror images and again, I could sit and enjoy this all day.
Before breakfast, Kerri and I decided to try to catch “breakfast”. No such luck as these were too little to keep. Oh well. We did have some great pancakes and bananas cooked on the open fire.
Once we ate breakfast, we cleaned up our site and had everything packed up so that we could pack up the canoes quickly when we were to leave. We were going to check out the next lake and see what fish we could find in there. It was quite the portage and it did require some “hip thrusting” to get through the mud and weeds. If you are an experienced canoer, you probably have been in this situation before.
This little lake gave us some good catching. Each time we threw a line we were catching. Yahoo!! Seems like there were just so many in here. At one point, there were 3 of us who had a fish on. They were all relatively big, and it was the biggest fish I caught the entire time. It wasn’t big enough for me to claim “biggest fish”, but I was proud of it. This guy though decided to do a little dance when I was holding it and it ripped out of my hand cutting my thumb. BoOOoO. Oh well.
If you have not yet checked out Cruising Canoes, I would highly recommend you do. There are many trips to choose from, such as day trips, shorter weekend trips, and longer trips that happen in the summer. I hope you have enjoyed my little fishing excursion.
