Years ago as a family we went to the Bruce Peninsula during the summer to camp, hike and swim in the blue waters of Georgian Bay. This year I went in the winter with a very special person, Christina, to help celebrate her 50th birthday.
I didn’t think that winter would be a busy time to visit the Bruce Peninsula but upon our arrival into the parking lot, there were quite a number of people. Our plan was to hike the trails to Indian Cove, the Grotto and possibly the Overhanging Point if we had time.
As soon as we hit the trail we both put on our ice cleats as the trails were very icy and we did not want to fall. Before heading to the Grotto, we first headed out to the shore to check out Indian Cove and the blue waters. It was a pretty neat experience to hear and see Christina’s reaction to seeing these waters for the first time in person.
At this point we were both very happy to have the ice cleats as this area was covered in sheer ice from all the storms that had been hitting this area over the past few weeks. The formations of the ice and snow on the trees were like something out of a Dr. Seuss book.
Cool ice formations
As we continued down the trail to the Grotto I could hear Christina ask “Have we seen the Grotto yet? Is there still more?”. So when we did get there, we stopped to take pictures from the top and then walked around to take in the full view. It is such a beautiful place and I partly wished it was summer so we could go swimming.
Our adventure continued down the trail as we planned on a long afternoon of adventures. We were both getting hungry so we stopped at a lovely sheltered place to sit and eat our lunch. During the summer these areas are really busy with sunbathers, but today it was just us soaking in the winter sun.
From here we decided we had time to visit the Overhanging Point. This was a section of trail that I was not not familiar with. The last time I had hiked this trail, we headed back from the beach to the parking lot. With our daylight running low, we opted to not climb down the side of the Overhanging Point to explore, as we still had the long drive back to our AirBnB as well as stopping somewhere for supper.
Overall we had a lovely afternoon exploring the Bruce Peninsula National Park, ending with a side trip to Tobermory where we checked out the lighthouse.
Happy exploring everyone! I hope you have enjoyed our trip to the Bruce!
Always good to read about your adventures <3
