When we first visited Killarney a few years ago we loved it so much that we knew we would have to go back. It’s a beautiful park, which of course means it’s also extremely popular and booking a site needs to be done well in advance. So when I happened to check last minute and saw an opening for three nights starting on a Saturday – clearly a cancellation – we jumped on it, despite the facts that we had tickets to a concert Friday night and that we would be getting back only two days before leaving for our vacation to British Columbia!

Backcountry meals. Either you love them or hate them. I have tried a few different ones in my day with mixed reviews. But these days, I find it difficult to get meals that meet my dietary needs since I have a dairy intolerance, and most dehydrated meals have some form of dairy. There are a few that don’t, but I have not enjoyed them very much. I mean, I’ll eat them if needed, but I am always on the search for something new.

Last July my son and I went on our first overnight canoe trip to a local park without my hubby. I wanted to test out his skills in our canoe and how he’d handle carrying gear on a portage. He was not a very strong paddler so I knew we had to keep the paddling distance short, but I was pleased to see how well he handled it and could tell that he’d be able to take on a more challenging trip this year.
