Christmas was a little different for us this year and I couldn’t be happier! It has been a very long time since we have ‘come home’ to Newfoundland for Christmas. Although we have been living in Ontario for almost twenty years now, Dan and I are both from The Rock and although we’ve been home for summer vacation almost every year since moving away, this is our first time home for the holidays.

After a long summer with some fantastic padding adventures, it’s time to hang our canoe up for the winter. This time of year, it’s difficult to plan for canoeing since the water can freeze overnight making travel difficult or impossible, not to mention dangerous. This year, the cold weather arrived earlier than we anticipated, but with a close eye on the forecast, we bundled up and headed out for our final paddle of the year.

For the past few years we have heard about how several Ontario Parks campgrounds host Halloween festivities, but have not had the chance to go. Camping near the end of October has its challenges due to the cold and wet weather, and although we’ve often camped as far north as Arrowhead Provincial Park for Thanksgiving, we are not really properly prepared for the colder camping season. However, this year we really felt like we had the knowledge and skills (and blankets) to endure any weather Mother Nature would throw at us.
