Even though we typically like to travel for at least a couple of weeks in the summer, this year it was jut not possible, but we still wanted an epic adventure. So, Dan took a couple of weeks of vacation and we sought out to plan something other than an overnight or weekend adventure. As I scoured through maps and books with different canoe routes to conquer, we settled on heading to the French River and completing a similar loop to one in Kevin Callan’s Top 50 Canoe Routes in Ontario.

Plan B… that’s where we left off right? Well as you read in part 1, plan A was to paddle and portage to the falls, but after realizing that it would take about 6 hours to complete the round trip we made a plan B. Hayden was very pleased to know there was a plan B which would mean us paddling back to the car – load it for the drive – and drive to the falls access trail. To be honest, I was happy that was the decision we went with for a couple of reasons…

It seems as though Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park is the theme for our adventures the last few posts. This park is conveniently close to us and provides some great overnight and day paddling adventures. This adventure took us to a different area of the park with another set of family friends.

It seems like Kawartha will see a lot of me this year. From our day paddling trip in May, to a solo trip a few weekends ago, to plans in the future to head out as a family, Kawartha is the place to be right now for me. With the opening of back country camping I knew I was heading out somewhere, I didn’t care where, but somewhere. I picked Kawartha as I am familiar with it, plus it is close and I knew exactly where I wanted to go. The boys did not join me on this trip as the bugs were expected to be bad and I seem to tolerate the bugs more than them.
