I can’t officially say that the ice is out in ALL of Ontario, but down in our little section of it we are officially ice free. Of course that means it is time to get our canoe out for her first paddle of the year. She had been waiting patiently in our garage for the water to be soft for a very long time.

As the 2018 canoeing season was nearing it’s end, we really wanted to get out in our canoe at least one more time and after some consideration, we decided that it was time to visit an area that is fairly new to us. In the spring I had headed to the Haliburton Highland Water Trails for a solo trip and I knew that we should come back to this park, so we booked a night on Big East.

When ticket sales started for the Ontario Backcountry Canoe Symposium in April 2019, it got me thinking back to August when we headed out to Kawartha Highlands for a weekend adventure. The park is located just over an hour drive from us and offers smaller lakes with equally small portages (for the most part), so it makes for an easy last minute weekend getaway.
Wait… What?? I’m going to be 40? Part 1
As you may have guessed from the title, this blog is dedicated to my 40th birthday. For the past couple of years, we have gone camping together on my birthday since it usually falls on Labour Day weekend. However, for my 39th I left the family behind and I went on a trip with Cruising Canoes to the French River with 10 people I didn’t know, and this year I went canoe tripping with Christina. We have been wanting to do a summer canoe trip together and Labour Day weekend was our first chance. It just happen to fall on my big birthday.
