During our stay in Algonquin Park over New Year’s, we love having the opportunity to go out exploring. This year we decided on visiting the falls near Mew Lake on the Highland Backpacking trail and the falls on the Track and Tower trail. Notice a theme here? We went searching for waterfalls.
Hiking a High Peak (Thanksgiving Weekend Trip Part 1)
The past few years we have gone camping in Arrowhead Provincial Park on the Thanksgiving weekend to catch the fall colors. This year we knew the colors were not the best, so we decided to do something a little different. For Thanksgiving this year, we headed to Lake Placid in New York State. We have been here twice before, but the timing was lining up nicely with the fall color reports for the area.

Searching for Fall Colors
This years fall colors in Algonquin Provincial Park hit peak early, and I mean weeks early. We have been watching the fall color report closely, and we just happened to have a weekend open just when they were due to hit peak. I checked on the Ontario Parks reservation system and was lucky to find ONE site open for Saturday so I booked it immediately.

Sunday…
The usual morning. Get up, eat, figure out plans for the day. We checked the weather in the park office and there was a 40% chance of rain. Something we can work with. There was a risk of thunderstorms as well, which was no surprise from the warm and muggy weather we were having. We double checked our information for Silver Peaks, and decided to make a go for it.
