Mummers – Newfoundland Traditions

Christmas was a little different for us this year and I couldn’t be happier! It has been a very long time since we have ‘come home’ to Newfoundland for Christmas. Although we have been living in Ontario for almost twenty years now, Dan and I are both from The Rock and although we’ve been home for summer vacation almost every year since moving away, this is our first time home for the holidays.

Tibb’s Eve!

One of the best things about being here for the Christmas holidays (besides being with family) are the holiday traditions like Tibb’s Eve. It’s a celebration that happens the night before Christmas Eve when you spend time with friends and family “havin’ a time”. Doing a quick Google search will give you some more info if you’re interested 🙂

This year my sister hosted the Tibb’s Eve party. The best part was that we got to see old friends and also met new people. We had some fun with fake mustaches, and it was nice to hang out with my brother and sister.

Mummers

One of the biggest parts of Tibb’s Eve is getting a visit from Mummers. Although not as popular as it was years ago in smaller communities, Mummering is when people dress up in crazy outfits and go from house to house offering a dance in exchange for a drink. Then the home owners try to guess who it was under the outfits. This would continue around the community until all houses were visited. I still remember my first experience with mummers as a child, and I was happy to see that “someone” was keeping the tradition alive at our party.

As the night got into full swing, The Mummers Song came on the stereo and our mummer came for a dance with his ugly stick (look that one up too)! Although we all knew who it was, we all played along and a few people even joined in for a dance around the kitchen.

Thank you for reading about our fun holiday tradition. Do you have some holiday traditions? We would love to hear about them in the comments.

This is our last post for the year 2019 and 2020 will have some great adventures on the horizon.

  1. Sue, I so enjoyed reading your blog about your Christmas holiday on the Rock. I have been very fortunate to travel extensively and I can honestly say that my trip to Newfoundland in 2007 ranks at the top for me. Absolutely loved my time there and cannot wait to return. It was interesting hearing about the Mummers tradition. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks so much. Newfoundland is definitely a place that many people would want to return for a visit after their first.
