Sunshine and Hiking in Vanderwater

When the days are warm and sunny, we do our best to get outside and find adventure where we can. It is especially important right now during this time of social distancing and isolation that we take some time to get outside and breath in the fresh air and seek out the sun that shines so bright on these spring days.

Our hike in Vanderwater Conservation Area occurred a few weeks ago when we were on our extended March break. We took every precaution needed in this time by parking away from other vehicles and staying at least 2 meters away from people we passed on the trails, which wasn’t hard since we only saw two families.

From the main parking lot we headed into the red trail and set our goal on hiking the high ridge across the far East side of the conservation area. This trail is less traveled than others because it connects to the longest of the trails but we were up for the longer hike, and with the sun shining as bright as it was, we were happy to spend the time in the woods.

This trail passes by the Scout camp where there is no shortage of funny looking outdoor bathrooms. The one below reminds me of an old phone booth.

Behind the Scout camp we found the trail to the ridge. In the winter this trail is also a great cross country ski location with the added bonus of a covered shelter near the top. We meandered through the woods, over small creeks and passed the pond that luckily wasn’t flowing completely over the trail. In the past we have had to turn around at this location due to the pond completely overtaking the trail making it impassable.

Wandering through the trails while soaking in the sun seems to make all the world’s worries disappear, even for just a little bit of time. We are all smiling, we are happy and that is what everyone should get from getting outdoors and being on adventures.

Once we had reached an intersection point that would take us to the main road or the trail back to the Scout camp from the other side, we opted for the trail. We wanted to stay in the woods for as long as possible, leaving only a small section to walk on the road back to our vehicle.

Thanks for following along on our afternoon hike. I hope everyone is enjoying the sun when they can and doing their best to stay safe.

    1. Your Welcome. I hope people are still trying to at least get outside their house for a bit in these times. Even if just on the sidewalks. 🙂
