Trent River Day Trip

One very beautiful Saturday morning we headed to Frankford to paddle on the Trent River. The river is part of the Trent River Watershed and contains a series of locks that go from Trenton all the way to Port Severn and Georgian Bay. We were not paddling that big of a distance, however we have really been wanting to get out and explore this river system.

We decided that we would start near the lock in Frankford and paddle upriver as far as we wanted before turning around riding the current back. The first push off the shore just feels amazing. I am always happy when I get out paddling and any bit of time I can spend on the water sooths my mind.

As we paddled north, we passed by a seasonal campground (which we had no idea even existed!). A few of the residences waved and said hello as we paddled by. Nearing the end of the lock channel we passed by what looked like old remnants of a swing bridge system. It’s hard to imagine a road once went through this section of the lock.

Eventually we exited the lock and ended up on the Trent River where there are many houses and cottages. There were also a few other boaters out enjoying the beautiful day.

As we paddled further we knew that we would not reach the next lock as it was quite a distance up river. Our plan was to just paddle as far as we felt before turning back and heading home. Before we made the decision to turn around we ate our lunch while drifting back down the river.

The paddle back to our vehicle was easier as we now had the current of the river helping us along. It always amazes us when we paddle on a river that has no visible current just how much you feel that current on the return trip.

As always in his typical fashion, our son sits in the middle, on the bottom of the canoe (why did we get one with an extra seat?), just chilling and letting us do all the work. Eventually he will paddle more, but he does take advantage of times like this to just sit back and enjoy. Honestly, I don’t blame him.

Thanks for following along with our adventures. The good news is that things are starting to open up in the area and we will be getting out on more adventures, which means more blog posts throughout the summer.
