As part of Ontario Parks’ Healthy Parks Healthy People philosophy they created the First Day Hike challenge. The idea is to start the new year out right by going for a hike on January 1st (and sharing it on social media in hopes to win some prizes). This year we were not in Ontario for the holidays, so hiking in an Ontario Park was not an option, but we decided to complete the challenge anyway by hiking a section of the East Coast Trail in Newfoundland – not too shabby for a backup location.

While on our East Coast adventure this summer we decided to visit L’anse Aux Meadows in northern Newfoundland. This location is where vikings were first known to have set foot on the island and discovered this new land. Having just been to Iceland, this was a very neat connection for us as we saw lots of Norse history there which connects to Newfoundland, our home province.
East Coast, Iceland – Day 4
Good morning Day 4, kinda… We were greeted with fog, and lots of it for our next section in Iceland. It really felt like we had been transported to the East Coast of Newfoundland, not the East Coast of Iceland. The plan for today was to drive the East Coast and head inland a bit to the North Coast. Breakfast was the usual oatmeal, then we opened the map to check out any symbols that might be points of interest, and hit the road.
