SUP you say? Part 1…

Something New!
Near the end of June, my friend J asked me if I was interested in doing a 4 week SUP course. For those of you who do not know, SUP stands for “Stand Up Paddleboard”.

The first session went really well! We both managed to stand up on the first try, and stayed on the board the entire way around the lake.  It wasn’t until the end that a kid, also on a board, bumped me from behind and I fell in the water. Just in time for the instructor to demo “getting back on your board” if you fall in.  I was the demo!  Not intentional, and everyone was glad I was the one that fell in as I have a bit higher patience for kids than other LOL.

Session Two!
J thought it was a great idea if my hubby and son came along on our second session.  This area was great for swimming as there was a marked swimming area, AND was a opportunity for him to take pictures of us. (Check out his website http://www.dannysheppard.com ) He took some really great pictures of us, so please check out his site.

Once again we headed for the water, got ready and off we went.  This lake is really small, shallow, and you do have the option of not wearing the PFD for the lessons.  I know the deal, everyone wear one.  I find I was comfortable without, as I would swim in this water without one, and I had this big floating board attached to my leg if I fell in. I wasn’t going far.  If I was in a different location, this PFD would be worn the entire time.

This session we learned a few more strokes, which actually are difficult since I am so used to canoeing.  I have to forget my canoe paddle strokes and learn a different way for SUP.  We also tested out the wobbliness of the board and again circled the lake.

Heading out.
Bend and reach (ok, I’m not as good reaching)
