Whales Steal the Show!!

Fish or Whales?

On our most recent visit to Newfoundland, we were treated to some special activity from the whales.  It was the cod food fishery season, and with that my Father-in-Law takes us out to see if we are able to catch anything. My parents both love cod, and whatever fish we catch, I get to bring it back to them to enjoy.

This year was no different. We went out a couple of times, the first time we were skunked!  It was a little choppy, and both myself and my son get a little uneasy on the rough waters. We lasted just under an hour on the water and needed to get back on solid ground.

Heading out on the water to jig for cod.

The second time out, the ocean was calm and beautiful. Mother nature was being nice to us and allowing us to get out.  Today was wonderful.  Not only was there calm waters, there was fish as well!

This was the first fish I caught after I dropped my first line! Talk about luck!  All three of us caught fish on our first drop, and we quickly ended up with 6 fish in the boat.  We had to move along as they were not biting, and that’s when we saw the whales.

There was some fish in the ocean 🙂

It’s not every day that you can see whales at this quantity this time of year.  Apparently the whales were plentiful in the area, and people have been very lucky on the boat tours.  I quickly lost interest in fishing, since we did have half of the quota for the day, and I wanted to follow the whales.  We ended up following these two particular whales along the coast.  I was able to get a few pictures and videos.

In times like this, it was a shame that Dan was not here yet (he was arriving that night), because he would have had a field day taking pictures with his camera.  Having only a phone on hand, this was the best I could get.  You have to know that these are so much more majestic up close and I could have watched for hours.

The next day while sitting on my FILs patio, the whales were out again thrashing around.  I was able to get a little video through the binoculars.

If you get a change to get down east in the summer, I hope you get to see whales like we did on this trip.  They are quite the site.  We even had another day watching from Middle Cove Beach lookout where a couple of whales were feeding on the capelin below.
