It’s springtime, and that means that my parents are making their way back to Newfoundland after spending the last few months in Myrtle Beach. Since we live so far apart and don’t see each other much they stop at our place to visit on their way south and then again on their way home – not exactly a direct route, but we’re glad they do. This year, their visit coincided with the Easter weekend and since we have not spent an Easter together in 16 years, we knew that we wanted to make the day special.
Who cares what TLC says?
Waterfalls aren’t the first thing you’d think of when you think of the Bay of Quinte region, but there are actually two pretty nice ones in Prince Edward County – it’s just that they are on private property and not usually accessible to the public. Luckily, every Easter weekend the Rotary in Picton host a waterfall tour of both falls giving everyone a chance to take them in during peak time. Although Dan, Hayden and I haven’t been to the falls in a few years we’ve seen them many times, so taking my parents to check them out was a great excuse to head back. Plus it had been raining for the previous couple of days so it we needed to get outside – and all that rain could only make the falls more impressive.
Our first stop was at Jackson’s Falls, which is actually very close to the main road – you can hear the water rushing from the road long before walking the short distance to the bottom of the falls, but you would never know it was there if you were driving by. In no time, we were all at the bottom of the falls and spent some time taking pictures and walking around the site. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but there were LOTS of people! Lucky for us, we all used our thinking machines and planned ahead well enough to wear our rubber boots, so we could walk into the middle of the river to get those elusive pictures with fewer people – and Hayden could see how deep he could go before reaching the limits of his boots.
Parsons Brewery
We chose not to visit the second falls but weren’t ready to head home, so we decided to visit Parsons Brewery for some good eats and drinks – when Hayden heard they had outdoor games to play, his objections quickly turned to excitement. The weather was treating us well, so we checked out the games before heading inside to order. My dad and Hayden tried to throw some horseshoes, but were coming up short. When Dan gave it a go, he hit the box twice – Hmm, hidden talent for this game!
Inside we checked out their Easter menu and ordered us some craft beers. My Dad had the Westy, my Mom the Crushable Pilsner, and I tried the Yuzu Pale Ale. Hayden and Dan shared the Churros and my mom and I shared their Local Charcuterie Board. I was pleased when this arrived as one of the cheeses was made with sheep’s milk (something I could eat)! With beers in hand and food in our belly, we sat and enjoyed the atmosphere of Parsons.
More Games AND Campfire!
The server found the ball and paddles for the ping-pong table so Hayden and Dan headed outside to play. It turns out that ping-pong in the wind is a little more tricky than a normal game, especially since Hayden hadn’t ever played before, but they still had fun. Meanwhile, the kitchen staff had started the fire which made me feel like a happy camper (even though I wasn’t camping).
This really was a special day for me as it’s not too often we have family around on holidays. Plus, the day before my mom cooked a huge turkey that I had bought, so I will be able to stuff myself all week with leftovers! We hope you all had a great weekend as well, and we’d love to hear about whatever adventures you got up to in the comments below!
Happy we could share this weekend with you. Memories made <3
It was lots of fun 🙂
