Northern Adventure – Temagami AGM and Dorset Tower

In October I had attended a very special meeting: the Friends of Temagami Annual General Meeting. I recently became a member of FOT, so attending my first meeting was important to me as I wanted to hear about what was going on in Temagami and if there are ways I would be able to help.

I had visited Temagami a few times over the years, and I knew that I would be making more trips here in the future. There is something majestic about it and after a few visits I’m starting to figure out what. Not only does it boast untouched old growth forests, and beautiful lakes, but there was something familiar about it. Something that made me feel something deep inside. Vague I know… but until you go visit, only then will you understand what I’m talking about.

I headed north, like way north, to Smoothwater Outfitters and Lodge where the meetings were held. I opted to camp out in my tent, but there are bunkhouses and other accommodations at the lodge if anyone is ever interested. Friday night I spent the night with friends, getting caught up on our adventures from the summer, and thinking ahead to adventures yet to come. It was great because Christina and I were once again hanging out.

Saturday Morning and Meeting Day

Saturday started off cool and crisp. After eating breakfast with Christina, we headed to the building where the meetings were to be held that day. The agenda that morning was your usual AGM business, along with talks about what to expect from FOT in the future seasons.

There was a lot of discussion about the Save Solace initiative, which includes the construction of a new road – Turner Road – and possible ways to help delay it, since it is going through an area with a high population of old growth trees which need protecting. If you click on the link, you can read about this initiative, as well as sign the petition.

FOT also has many other projects, such as spring trail maintenance, adopt a route, and ask an expert. If you are ever going to visit Temagami, then checking out the Friends of Temagami website will be very helpful.

The remainder of the weekend was getting to know other FOT members, as I am new to this group. That evening, the lodge cooked us the most delicious dinner (we actually had a super awesome lunch as well, but I forgot to get a picture)!

Sunday

Before leaving on Sunday morning, I walked the grounds at the lodge, taking in the sights and sounds of Temagami. I didn’t want to leave, but it was a long drive back home.

Dorest Tower

On my way home, I passed through Dorset and just had to check out the Dorset Tower. I have been here before with the fam jam, but I wanted to stop and check it out again. The fall colors were just past peak, but many of the trees were still showing their vibrant orange and reds. I accessed the tower by walking the road to the top (there is a surcharge to park and access the tower, which I happily paid as it supports the area), and in about 10 minutes I had reached the tower.

I immediately headed for the tower and climbed all the way up. It was just spectacular. The view from the tower is a full 360 and the forest below was littered with orange, red, and yellow trees.

Having gotten my fill of Temagami and fall colors, I finally made my way home. It was a very full weekend and I am happy to have shared it with some old and new friends. I will see you again soon Temagami!
