After a long summer with some fantastic padding adventures, it’s time to hang our canoe up for the winter. This time of year, it’s difficult to plan for canoeing since the water can freeze overnight making travel difficult or impossible, not to mention dangerous. This year, the cold weather arrived earlier than we anticipated, but with a close eye on the forecast, we bundled up and headed out for our final paddle of the year.
Staying Close to Home
Since the temperatures were not super warm outside we figured that paddling somewhere near our house was best. If, for any reason we had to bail, we would be a short drive to a warm house and dry clothes. So, we headed just a few minutes north to the Moira River which has become a favourite spot for us to squeeze in our last paddle of the year, as well as to get out for the first time in the spring (when the high water levels allow us to paddle amongst the trees).
It was a beautiful afternoon and we were happy to get out on the water one final time. It was a bit windy, but luckily the wind pushed us as we headed up river, and then the current took us back to our car – making for an easy, but cold paddle. It really is a lovely place to go.
Once back at the house, we washed up the canoe and hung her to dry, where she will sit quietly until we take her down for our first paddle of 2020. Any guesses as to when that will happen?
I would love to hear from you in the comments below. Thanks for reading and we hope you have been enjoying our adventures. There are only a couple more weeks left to 2019 and we have some big plans brewing for next year. Stay tuned!
