SUP Yoga

I have been on a SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) a number of times and even completed a 4 week course a few years back. I have really enjoyed these times on a SUP and I am always looking for more opportunities to get out on one, so when I heard that Kaylie from Frontenac Outfitters was offering SUP Yoga classes, I jumped at the opportunity.

I got up early Saturday morning on the Labour Day weekend and drove to Frontenac Outfitters. It was a lovely cool morning and I was excited to get out on the water and do this yoga class. I met up with Kaylie and chatted with her and Zack before heading down to Elbow Lake for the class. I was treated well as I was the only person signed up that morning and had a one on one session with Kaylie.

When you get on the board for the first time it takes a bit of time to get your legs under you so we started out with a short paddle to the yoga anchors and I quickly found my balance. My first challenge was getting the yoga board clipped to the anchors. I had to shimmy to the end of the board, reach in the water, and then clip the board. I got a little wet as the board sank on the end, but the water was really nice so I wasn’t too worried about it.

With my gear strapped to the board and myself anchored in so I wouldn’t float away, Kaylie lead me through an hour of yoga moves. These moves really challenged me in ways I could not describe. I leaned left and right, did some warrior moves, some sun salutations, and managed to get up and down on the board multiple times without falling in.

After my hour of pushing my body through these moves, Kaylie informed me that I was able to use the board and paddle around Elbow Lake at my pleasure. When I had done enough paddling, I left the board by the lake and walked back to the store where one of their workers came and picked up the gear. I had never paddled on this lake, but I didn’t stay long as I was surprised at how tired I was after the yoga session.

After walking back to their shop I did some shopping! There was a good selection of camp fuel and backcountry meals from Happy Yak. I purchased three meals that I will eventually use over my next few trips. I am always looking for vegan (dairy-free) meals and Happy Yak has a few that meet this requirement for me.

Next year Kaylie will be offering more yoga classes on the SUP and I highly recommend her as she was a great instructor and guide and she was very encouraging through some of those more challenging positions.
