The Wild Center (Thanksgiving trip Part 2)

On Thanksgiving this year, we decided to head to Lake Placid.  With a 5 hour drive on the way there, we decided to stop at the Wild Center in Tubber Lake to check out their new display, an interactive Wild Walk which is located about 30 feet in the air.  Years ago we had visited this place, and they were just in the process of building this new interactive display.

On arrival, we headed inside to purchase our ticket and to check out the displays inside the center.  There were some new displays, and below Hayden is checking out how snow can drift around trees.  It was fun to move the “wind” in different directions.

Playing in the Snow

The center has lots of displays, live ones as well, that describe the formation of the earth, soil, glaciers, and so on. Below was a cute sand turtle. He even turned his head when I was taking his picture. Even looks like he is smiling a little.

Hello Mr. Turtle

The middle of the center has an interactive painting station. There are videos playing of artists painting in water colors, and a table where you are able to try out some ideas. There were also trees of all sorts that you could hug, of course we did as we were told. After hugging the tree, Hayden and I took advantage of the painting display and both painted an autumn leaf.

Outside the building, you just have to stop and get a picture with the antlers!  Hayden is so much bigger this time that he had to bend his legs to fit his head in the correct spot.

We then headed to the Wild Walk. This was the interactive display where you walk around outside 30 feet in the air.  All along the walk, there are mini displays giving really good information about the outdoors.  This was my favorite one “Take a Breather”.  Might be the science teacher in me 🙂

Check out how far some birds will travel in this area!

How Far?

The one display that I thought was really cool was the big spider web.  I did take a picture, but with so many other people in it, whom I don’t know, I decided not to share it.  However, if you check out the Wild Center webpage, I’m sure there is a picture for you to see.

High above the trees you get to see all the great colors, as well as the high peaks of the Adirondacks.  Whiteface Mountain is in the picture below and that’s where we will be heading next.  Somewhere to the right is Cascade Mountain, the high peak that we plan to hike on Sunday. (You can check out the post here –> http://suesoutdoorcrew.ca/2017/10/18/hiking-high-peak/)

The Views!

If you get a chance to visit the Adirondacks, I highly recommend visiting the Wild Center.  They even have live events with different animals during the day in their main foyer.
