Egan Chutes Provincial Park Waterfall Hike

Over the past few years, my crew and I have been searching for waterfalls to visit in both summer and winter. There is just something about rushing water that seems to draw us in.  Over New Years, we went to two waterfalls in Algonquin Park.  Our most recent adventure has taken us to Egan Chutes Provincial Park.  This is located near Bancroft and is only open for day use purposes like hiking and snowshoeing.  There is no camping permitted in this park.

At the parking area you over look the river and a section of old bridge foundations.  You can tell this is where the older highway was many years ago. From here you follow the trail along the river for about 1 km. This is the appeal of these waterfalls for us.  Whether we have been here in winter, spring, summer or fall, the walk is short.

Hi there

Along the trail, there were sections of ice and it was covered in some really cool ice formations.  It looked like feathers and if you imagine really hard I bet it felt soft LOL.

Feathers on ice? or Feather ice?

At the falls it’s amazing to watch just how fast they are flowing.  Dan, as usual, stakes out his spot to start taking pictures with his fancy camera, while I shoot some pics with my phone.  Hayden managed to find icicles to play with and made himself a makeshift slide to go down.  At least he is good at entertaining himself.

On the way back, the sun was shining through the trees and made the trail look so peaceful.  I also took this time to get pictures of the deer and wolf tracks in the snow.  It was so neat to see the tracks and the path that each of the animals take.  The deer all cross the river at the same section.  There were multiple different tracks.

Wolf prints (was it hunting the deer?)

Once back at the parking area, we quickly warmed up and headed home. If you have not yet been to this little park, I would recommend it.  We do plan on coming back in the summer. Maybe we will even go swimming in the pools that are formed at the bottom of the falls. Until next time!!
