Food for Thought?

Food? Why yes I’ll talk about food! I love food, I eat food, it is a necessity LOL.  I had recently completed a multi night solo canoe trip to Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park and thought I’d share some insights from it.  I recently wrote about what gear I packed in my 60L barrel for this trip, now I will share what food I packed.

What I packed and what I actually ate differed a little on this trip. If you read about it, you can see that I cut my trip a day short due to my health and impending thunderstorms on the third night.

Here is a picture and a list of what I had taken with me on this trip.

Food for my trip.

List of food items as per each meal

  • Day 1 supper: Pizza (naan bread, pizza sauce, pepperoni, bacon bits, 2 year old aged cheddar)
  • Day 2 breakfast: two eggs, English muffin, 2 year old cheddar

    yummy breakfast
  • Day 2 lunch: Bagel and peanut butter, granola bar
  • Day 2 supper: Mexican Quinoa (dehydrated meal)

    Give this a try?
  • Day 3 breakfast: pancakes and syrup
  • Day 3 lunch: Irish Sheppard pie (dehydrated meal)
  • Day 3 supper: Key lime chicken (dehydrated meal)
  • Day 4 breakfast: Oatmeal (with granola and brown sugar)
  • Plus snacks (granola bars, pecans, tea, hot chocolate, etc)

I also had some dehydrated mashed potato, an extra English muffin (and peanut butter), Indian Red Lentil soup, and an extra oatmeal if needed.

What I actually ate (due to leaving early and not feeling the best)

  • Day 1 Supper: Pizza (this stayed the same as I love this meal!)
  • Day 1 Snack: Granola bar and some dark chocolate
  • Day 2 Breakfast: 2 eggs, English muffin and cheese
  • Day 2 Lunch: Granola bar, Bagel with Peanut Butter
  • Day 2 Snack: pecans
  • Day 2 Supper: Tried the Mexican Quinoa meal, but as I was not feeling well I ate about 1/3 of the package.  I decided to cook a package of oatmeal and added some granola and brown sugar.
  • Day 2 Evening Snack: more pecans and some dark chocolate
  • Day 3 Breakfast: Oatmeal, granola and brown sugar

I didn’t have any of my hot drinks as the weather was actually just too hot for it. I did come home with a lot of extra food, but again it was because I left a day early.  I really wanted to try the Sheppard’s Pie and Indian Red Lentil soup as they are dairy free.  Next time!

I like to have meals that I can swap around depending on how I feel during a trip, which is a huge bonus. I do separate my meals based on breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as day 1, 2, 3 etc.  This way I can easily move things around.  For trips I also have a meal plan either typed out on my phone, or hand written on a piece of paper that I carry. I found that on the phone I could swap meals around easier as I just retyped or formatted the note.
