Humphrey Barn and Nature Trails

As the seasons change from soft water to hard water, the types of trips change as well. So, on this particular outing Christina and I stayed off the water, and instead headed to a couple of hiking trails that I had never been to before. We started our day with a plan, but due to some obstacles we encountered we had to change our plans and adapt.

Being out hiking with Christina is a lot of fun as I get to see new places that are a lot further away from where I live. When we do these kinds of outings I will spend time at her place and we will explore the local trails in the Muskoka’s.

Our plan was to hike the trails at Torrance Barrens Conservation Reserve and have a picnic lunch. Seems like a good plan, right? However, once we started our hike at Torrance Barrens we realized quickly that we would not be able to stay. The trails were flooded and impassable, so we left and headed to Humphrey Barn and Nature Trails instead.

When we arrived at Humphrey Barn we agreed that we would hike the Moose Tracks Trail as it was the longest one and we wanted to make the most out of the remainder of our day. This trail system is very impressive as they are all color coordinated and the map and information along the trails were very informative.

The trails were all in really great condition and provided us with some spectacular views across little ponds and waterways along the way. One thing to be careful about is the boardwalks! They were very slippery in the wet conditions, so just be careful, as we both slipped a little along the way.

When we reached the very end of the Moose Tracks trail we stopped to have a small snack. Our picnic lunch was interrupted earlier in the day by a visit to a local chip truck. (If you know me, chip trucks are a weakness and I love a nice plate of fries.)

There were a few other hikers along these trails, but for the most part we were on our own. Our main company was a woodpecker that entertained us for a few minutes jumping through the trees and picking at them to find food.

Overall I was very impressed with this hike and I will try to get back for another visit in a different season. Thanks to Christina for being such a wonderful host as always.
