Arkon West Trail in Frontenac

Frontenac Provincial Park is known for its multitude of hiking trails and canoe routes and we have paddled and hiked many of them over the years and love it there. So recently we decided to go hike the Arkon Trail Loop to the Bufflehead Trail connector, which we had never been on before, however we did not complete the loop as intended.

Getting outside was really important for us as I have been dealing with some vertigo issues and needed a break from being in the house. I had started to feel better and thought that going for a small hike would feel good, so I started looking over our map of Frontenac Park and decided that we would hike the Arkon Trail and cut the trail distance down by taking the Bufflehead connector trail. It seemed like a great plan, however, that was not what happened.

When we arrived at the park the main parking lot was already really full, which was expected as the road to Big Salmon Lake was now closed and anyone hiking the trails would have to park in the main lot and not the other parking areas closer to other trail heads. We managed to find the one spot remaining, parked and got ourselves ready for the hike.

The first section of our hike took us from the parking lot along the Corridor Trail until we reached the entrance to the West side of the Arkon Trail.

On the trail towards campsite number 7, we crossed many beaver dams with wooden bridges to help with the ease of crossing. This trail was in great condition and can be easily seen that the volunteers take good care of the bridges and other signage along the way.

After hiking for just over an hour we finally reached the trail intersection to where we could hike the full Arkon Loop or take the short cut across the Bufflehead Trail. However, we assessed our location and realized we were only a third of the distance from the parking lot. Since we were looking at a lot more hiking, which would not be the best as I was still recovering from my vertigo, we doubled backed on the same trail to the main parking lot.

Our intent was to hike the full loop so that we would not have to double back on the same trail, which was a little disappointing, however, we will return to Frontenac again and complete this hike in its entirety.
